Ronnie Drew, Dubliners founder, dies

Ronnie Drew, the gravelly voiced folk singer and guitarist who founded the Irish group the Dubliners and also sang with the Pogues and other rock bands, died Aug. 16 in Dublin. He was 73. Drew, who had throat cancer, died in St. Vincent's Private Hospital, his family said in a statement.

- Farewll Ronnie Drew: Like many native Dubliners I am sadder this weekend as the world and Irish Folk music has lost the great Ronnie Drew, the legendary Irish folk singer and musician, who died at the age of 73. Drew, the founder of Irish folk group The Dubliners, had been battling cancer for some time. In a brief statement, his family confirmed he passed away at St Vincent's Private Hospital in Dublin on Saturday 15 August 2008.
